These days, there is a lot of information available for pregnant mothers. There is advice available from books, TV shows and websites. All of these resources aim to inform mothers about the various facts of pregnancy. Despite all of this, there are some realities of pregnancy that may still catch you off guard. The fact is that the experience of pregnancy differs from woman to woman; the books may not have all the information you need and your doctor may have no interest in informing you on matters that are not strictly related to your health.
There is also the fact that some women are hesitant to mention conditions that embarrass them. Here are a few symptoms of pregnancy that you may encounter:
1. Hormonal Mood Swings
Due to the hormones produced, premenstrual syndrome and pregnancy tend to have a lot in common. The moods you may feel can range from irrational anger to depression; you may be crying at one point in the day and feeling euphoric shortly after. If you normally deal with PMS, this is a sign that you may encounter the same type of mood swings during your pregnancy. If you suffer from extremes of depression, you should talk to your physician about this.
2. Varicose Veins
Due to the hormones being produced during pregnancy, veins in various parts of your body will become enlarged and this enlargement may cause blood to pool. The result of the pooling is varicose veins and hemorrhoids. While these will usually go away after childbirth, they can also be minimized if you can avoid standing for long periods of time and if you wear loosely fitting clothes.
This is when there is an excess of fluid in your tissues, most women will experience some form of this during pregnancy. The changes in your body may prevent the return of blood from your legs and along with the fact that you are retaining water, will cause them to swell. In the case of edema, wearing maternity support clothing may be able to help reduce the swelling. After your baby has been delivered, the swelling should decrease rapidly as your body gets rid of all of its excess fluid.
Your body may undergo a number of changes to that will bring about this result. It will be producing more progesterone, which can cause sleepiness; you will also have lower blood sugar and simultaneously, your body will be hard at work making more blood. All of the changes combine to cause a feeling of tiredness.
5. General Body Pains
The uterus is expanding and may put pressure on the sciatic nerve; this can cause a pain that runs from the lower back and down one of your legs. The weight of the baby’s head may also cause pain around the area of the pelvic bone. Adding to this is a hormone produced by the body to relax the joints and which may make you more susceptible to joint injury.
6. Morning Sickness
This nausea may occur with or without vomiting and is one of the more well-known symptoms of pregnancy. It can occur at any point in the day and is thought to be the result of the rapid increase in progesterone and estrogen levels that occurs in the body during pregnancy. While pregnant, you may also be more sensitive to smells; this can cause nausea.
7. Increased Urination
Many women develop the need to take frequent trips to the bathroom during pregnancy. In part, this is due to the production of a hormone that causes more blood to go to the pelvic area. Another factor is the growth of your uterus, which may put pressure against your bladder. This issue is usually only present during the first trimester and during the third, when the problem is due to the baby’s shift to the lower pelvic area; this places even more pressure against the bladder.
It is important to research the facts of pregnancy so that you will have as few surprises as possible. Consult your doctor if you have any concerns and talk to women who have been through it before. Remember, most of these problems are only temporary and will go away once the baby is born.
